"Evesham Bagbusters

  • Who are we?
  • Where did we come from?
  • Why?

Evesham Bagbusters came into being at the beginning of January 2008 following a casual conversation in the Evesham and Pershore Freecycle Cafe group.

Several environmentally motivated individuals then got together to form the EBB committee. We are a voluntary not for profit independent group.

Our sole aim is to rid Evesham of single use plastic carrier bags and to help Evesham become a greener place to live.

Our mission statement is:-

"To encourage Evesham to become a town in which single use plastic carrier bags are no longer socially acceptable"

Bagbusters receive cash boost

Peter Austin

23 April 2008

EVESHAM Bagbusters' campaign to rid the town of single-use plastic bags has received a welcome financial boost.

The committee, made up of town residents, has been granted £500 from the Evesham Market Town Partnership to help promote their campaign as they try to get more shops to ban the bags.
If the Bagbusters meet the the target they set out to achieve by the end of the year, they will then receive a further £1,500 for year two, and
£1,500 for year three.

Lew Hammond, manager of Evesham Market Town Partnership, said they appraised the application and applauded their community spirit.
"It is a campaign of awareness therefore it merits the support because unless it has something pushing it, it may die a death," he said.
"There's a lot of small traders in the town and helping them to covert to being a plastic bag-free business is something we can help with by providing our support.

"They will be able to promote their campaign at events throughout the year organised by the Market Town Partnership."

Evesham Bagbusters chairman Mike Nielsen said the money would be spent on publicity, advertising and administration costs to help progress the campaign.

"This level of commitment from an influential public body is vital if the campaign is to succeed," he said.
"After all, this issue affects the whole of the community, businesses, individuals, and public bodies alike, so it is incumbent on everybody to play their part.
